I recently read in the latest issue of Good Housekeeping that in order to make bamboo into a soft fabric material it has to go through quite extensive chemical processes and then it's blended with cotton. Maybe a better way to go would be organic cotton instead of bamboo... Any opinions?

I found an article outlining the different ways bamboo can be processed into fabric. It sounds like although in most cases it's not as "friendly" as it could be, it is headed in the right direction. See http://blog.cheaptents.com/bamboo-an-eco-friendly-fabric-or-not/ for the blog. It is pretty informative.

That article was great, thanks so much for sharing the link to it!! Maybe companies selling bamboo products will have to start including information on their labels as to HOW their bamboo was processed :o)

Bamboo is extremely durable (flooring is beautiful), probably never wear out, so I have to assume that the fabric would be too. Sometimes it is a trade-off (throw-away less versus the complex processing). Here in the U.S. tho, we would throw away clothes anyway, because the styles change so fast, and we wouldn't be caught DEAD in last year's jeans style! To become "GREEN", the first thing we have to change is our HEADS! We have to get over the idea that we have to have new, new, new all the time. As soon as the manufacturers tell us that Mango is "out" and Eggplant is "in" (colors), we throw out everything in our houses in Mango and run out and buy Eggplant. I didn't read the blog on bamboo yet, so I will post this and read it now.

Did anyone see the Oprah program on "going green"? Pretty good eye opener, especially the part about the floating island of garbage in the Pacific. Hope it makes people think a little before they sling garbage around.
