I use www.mypoints.com to earn points for printing and using coupons, then you can use those points to get free gift cards. Unfortunately you can't double the coupons. You can also sign up for their emails and if you click through to them, you earn points as well. No purchase nesessary to get most points.

I also try to shop the sales with my coupons.

I live in an apartment and once the weather warms up a little bit more here I will get my container garden planted again, I usually plant 1 or 2 tomatoes, 1 or 2 eggplants, peas, lettuce and whatever else sounds interesting.

I also dehydrate fruit when it is in season. I think you can dehydrate vegetables for soups and what not.

ScrapPrincess, I too have a raised bed called a lasagna garden (I read a book about lasagna gardens to make my it). It basically has layers of organic materials anything from peat moss to grass clippings to mulched leaves to soil. Now that I've been composting my families food scraps, I need to add that to the mix :o) But, we've still had some freezing temps here in the northwest at night so I haven't jumped to plant anything yet.

I'm planning on planting a tomato (probably a big kind like beef steak) and some lettuce (now that you reminded me how expensive lettuce is at the store! )and zucchini.

My 12 year old son has been learning to garden at middle school with his class and wanted to start his own here at home so, my hubby built him a raised bed and now I just need to get him the soil for it. It will be interesting to see what he plants :o) I don't have veggies in containers, just flowers in hanging baskets out front.

Yesterday I planted lettuce seeds in large containers on my deck so that I can stop buying expensive lettuce all summer. I eat so much salad that it's a budget-killer to keep buying it from the store or even the farmer's market.
I also planted peas & tomatoes in my raised garden bed that my husband built with 2x8's. I loved the raised beds - so much easier to take care of.
I plan to plant pumpkin seeds tomorrow since my daughter always wants tons of them in the fall (especially those little ones) and they cost so much to buy. I am doing sugar pumpkins too so I can make my own pumpkin puree. Trying to think ahead....and wish I had room for all veggies *sigh*

Do any of you grow veggies in containers?

This year we have done a few things differently because of the recession. We have chickens can you beleive it, I hope the neighbors don't mind. There are 21 of them now and we are still workign on the shed for out back. They are laying hens so hopefully no Cocka-doodle-do's in the morning. Also because it is too early for our part of utah to start a garden I started it with starter seeds inside, this has allowed us to jumpstart the garden without the risk of it freezing. HTH

another tip I learned is to have a container in the freezer that I add leftover veggies (a spoonful of green beans, corn, broccoli etc.) to each night. When it is full I can make a great veggie soup and nothing goes to waste.

on the frozen vegies (onion, green pepper) I have been freezing my own. Like others I only use part of the onion usually so I've been cutting the whole thing and freezing the un-used part. I've done sliced strips for fajitas and chopped for other things like sauces same with the peppers. I usually spread them out on a cookie sheet and flash freeze then put into a zip loc bag. that way I am able to take out only what I need each time. I plan to do this with lots of things from the garden this year, I may even dehydrate some to make them last even longer for storage.
