Don't you just
love the photos that capture people
IN the moment? You know the moment I'm talking about--the one where it seems like nobody else is there and they are just cracking up laughing or sending a loving gaze at someone? Like this:
We're so excited to be able to feature famed photographer Allison Tyler Jones for this challenge! AND--even better yet, she's sharing with us her top
3 favorite tips and tricks to getting your subjects to relax and give you that easy going atmosphere.
Cr8 Everyday Crafts:
What 3 techniques or tricks do you do to get your people to have those fabulously candid moments?
ATJ:
1) By the time I start shooting I have spent time on the phone or in person with the mom, then the first 2-3 minutes of the "shoot" I spend introducing myself to the family and getting to know them a little bit so that they feel comfortable with me.
2) I am a little bit wild and inappropriate during photo sessions---anything goes! I will joke with the dad, make pig noises at the kids and tease teenage boys mercilessly---all while I'm shooting, shooting, shooting. I keep the energy high by talking and laughing with them so I'm getting good reactions all the way through. This makes the shoot go quickly and they never get bored.
3) Work with your own personality to get the best from your subjects. If you have a quieter personality, my approach won't work for you. Find a way to connect, and stay connected to your subject and work QUICKLY if at all possible. When I see that some photographers are having 3-4 hour sessions of families or kids I want to stick a fork in my eye. I rarely have a session that goes over an hour and my clients appreciate that.
Good Luck!
