Don't you just love the photos that capture people IN the moment? You know the moment I'm talking about--the one where it seems like nobody else is there and they are just cracking up laughing or sending a loving gaze at someone? Like this:

We're so excited to be able to feature famed photographer Allison Tyler Jones for this challenge! AND--even better yet, she's sharing with us her top 3 favorite tips and tricks to getting your subjects to relax and give you that easy going atmosphere.

Cr8 Everyday Crafts:
What 3 techniques or tricks do you do to get your people to have those fabulously candid moments?

ATJ:
1) By the time I start shooting I have spent time on the phone or in person with the mom, then the first 2-3 minutes of the "shoot" I spend introducing myself to the family and getting to know them a little bit so that they feel comfortable with me.

2) I am a little bit wild and inappropriate during photo sessions---anything goes! I will joke with the dad, make pig noises at the kids and tease teenage boys mercilessly---all while I'm shooting, shooting, shooting. I keep the energy high by talking and laughing with them so I'm getting good reactions all the way through. This makes the shoot go quickly and they never get bored.

3) Work with your own personality to get the best from your subjects. If you have a quieter personality, my approach won't work for you. Find a way to connect, and stay connected to your subject and work QUICKLY if at all possible. When I see that some photographers are having 3-4 hour sessions of families or kids I want to stick a fork in my eye. I rarely have a session that goes over an hour and my clients appreciate that.

Good Luck!

I LOVED THIS CHALLENGE. I am always looking for that moment when I am taking pics. I know you said recent photo with this challenge in mind, but I couldn't resist the photo with my son reflecting at the Vietnam Memorial Wall. The pic is several years old.

I've been home all day nursing my 6 year old who has been fighting a 103 degree temp. Imagine my excitement when I logged on to my favorite site and read this. Seriously, I am SOOOO excited. I have truly fallen in love with photography again after getting a fabulous new DSLR for Mother's Day. Funny story, but the last photo contest I won was in 3rd grade, I when I won a photo contest with the National Zoo! I can't wait to get Allison's book to read more about taking great photos. Thank you thank you thank you!!! {doing a happy dance}

I hope so, because I was feeling pretty creative!  With summer well on its way, I’m getting into the fresh food groove and inspired to try some quick, simple recipes. The bright hues of the vegies reminded me of a garden party, which in turn made me remember I need to sew a few summer table [...]
