I have always loved English landscape garden design. My wife and I went to the UK last summer (her first trip there) and I made a point of showing her some of the nicest gardens in the Cotswalds. We came back inspired to turn the yard of our 100 year old dutch colonial house into an English cottage garden.
A key in garden design is to create a structure of the space. The paths, benches, walls, etc set the stage for the plants. Most english cottage gardens are surrounded by beautiful stone work walls. Here are a couple of pictures:
